The Deep One is an aquatic, fish-like demon and the only enemy that can hide underwater. They are unique to Stormheim Castle.
Strategy[]
Being aquatic demons, Deep Ones won't sink, unlike other enemies. They will hide underwater and jump out when Alcedor approaches them. Their attack is heralded by a violent splash of water at the spot where they are about to emerge.
When out of the water, they will frantically jump around until they either fall back in the water or get into a position from which they can start spitting projectiles at Alcedor. Their shots can be blocked with a shield, knocked back with Precision Strike (albeit not recommended due to the speed of the projectile), or simply ducked under, assuming Alcedor is standing on the same level as the Deep One.
While their projectiles and their erratic movement patterns are troublesome enough, what makes these fishy fiends particularly unbearable is that they tend to infest platforming sections where they can knock Alcedor into the water and to his doom. Because killing them before they emerge is not always an option without wasting a massive amount of resources, the best thing to do once you see the telltale splash is often to simply move through the obstacles quickly. Mercifully, underwater Deep Ones cannot track Alcedor's location and will always jump towards the spot where he was at the moment they detected him, not the one where he is at the moment of the jump.
Weakness[]
They can be harmed under the water. Spells, projectiles or long range weapons are best ways to kill them when they hide underwater.
Spells that are too weak to kill them in one hit, such as Drain Life, can still reveal their locations underwater. This can be useful to avoid getting taken by surprise.
Once a Deep One comes level with Alcedor, it will stop moving and keep spitting projectiles, even if Alcedor crouches under them. If one or more Deep Ones are shooting at you, for the love of everything holy, do not jump until you have killed them. Otherwise, the Deep Ones will also start jumping erratically all over the place and likely collide with Alcedor.
Trivia[]
- They can be spotted in Arkos if Alcedor flooded it by destroying the dam. However, they are merely a part of the background there, and cannot be killed by any means, nor can they deal any damage to Alcedor or any NPCs.
- They are a wholesale reference to the Deep Ones, a race of ocean-dwelling humanoids with fish-like characteristics described in H.P. Lovecraft's works, most famously in The Shadow Over Innsmouth.
