This page describes the main player characters Alcedor and Cervul, and their alternative personalities. It explains how to unlock them and describes their playstyles.

Alcedor[]

AlcedorSprite

By default, without using secret names or cheat codes, Alcedor uses an iron mace and shield in his arsenal. It will be the player's main weapon in a standard playthrough unless they opt to go for the evil route.

Combat[]

Alcedor's mace range helps him to keep distance from enemies such as undead and roaches. Players still need to be quite close to fight, and it can be difficult if enemies or weak points for bosses are located above ground level. His mace can be upgraded to deflect projectiles with the Precision Strike skill.

Unique about Alcedor is his shield. Other characters don't have a shield and therefore can't block projectiles. To block, he must not perform an attack. Blocking will stop most projectiles that can be deflected.

Evil Alcedor/Swordcedor[]

Alcedor will use a longsword instead of a mace and shield during his evil route after the First Summoning quest or if the player names him Swordcedor.

Combat[]

The longsword has twice the range of the mace and is very practical for keeping distant from enemies. Just like the mace, it can reflect projectiles if upgraded with the Precision Strike skill. Unfortunately, it is not accompanied by a shield, so the player must use the sword to reflect projectiles or simply dodge attacks.

Axcedor[]

To play as a barbarian, players must name their character Axcedor. Since Axcedor is nearly naked, his is defense is lower than usual.

Combat[]

The axe has a short delay before attacking, but it will swing in an arch around the character, reaching enemies that could normally only be hit while kneeling. It has same range as the sword and by default is a bit stronger than a mace.

Using Precision Strike is much easier with an axe; it allows the player to reflect projectiles that fly overhead while kneeling.

Gardakan[]

To play as a mage, players must name their character Gardakan.

Gardakan is Alcedor as a mage. He will use robes for armor and rings for his weapon. The main feature of Gardakan is that his Mana can regenerate, which mean you can use spells much more often than before without having to use Mana Potions or Elixirs. Aside from his slow attack rate, Gardakan's biggest weakness is his use of robes instead of armor, which causes him to take three times as much damage as usual.

Combat[]

Gardakan can cast long-range magic attacks. The attacks linger for a moment, have a long range, and to not function as projectiles. Casting them requires one mana. Attacking without any mana makes Gardakan punch directly in front of him, and his other skills' damage potential is greatly reduced. It is recommended to attack group of enemies to save mana. Additionally, all damage-dealing skills such as Skycall and Holy Charge have upgraded attacks.

The best spells for Gardakan are Familiar Spell and Shield Spell due to mana regen. Check out spells for more information.

Maxime Gunn[]

To play as Maxime Gunn, you need input the Konami Code at start of the game. The player can also have a machine gun during the "Future" ending, but they won't have any weapon upgrades even if playing as Maximme Gunn.

Maxime Gunn is a reference to the Contra series, and it has few differences beside Alcedor's weaponry. Maxime Gunn has 30 lives that do not reset at the Save Shrine. Each skill works a bit differently from its original counterpart, as well.

Combat[]

You can shoot in all 8 direction additionally while kneeling. If using Holy Light or Hellfire spell the gun will be shooting in spread mode. All skills have different ability than originally such as:

  • Precision Strike can't deflect other projectiles, but still can destroy crumbling blocks and will pierce through enemies.
  • Guided Strike will make character to drop three bombs downwards but will still remain in mid air.
  • Skycall is replaced by double jump, it very easy to use and much more mobile than original skill. Using a combination of this skill and Holy Charge dispenses the need to turn levers with the Familiar Spell if done correctly.
  • Holy Charge will propel character forward while he is carrying a rocket, skill activates instantly without need to reacharge before hand.

Maxime Gunn's damage potential far outshines that of any other characters. His gun is exceptional at destroying hordes of enemies and can take down bosses in a matter of seconds, with the exception of Azazel, who is balanced with Maxime's toolset in mind.

Stranger[]

"No one knows where The Stranger really comes from, or how he fell through a portal to Upel, shotgun in hand. But one question remains ...is he the long-lost descendant of Alcedor?"

To play as the Halloween special character, players must name their character Stranger. The character was added on Halloween 2022.

The Stranger is reference to Rick Taylor from Splatterhouse and Ash Williams from Evil Dead: Army of Darkness. Stranger has lower defense than Alcedor but better armory. His weapons are a double barrel shotgun that replaces the potion slot and a wooden stick as the default weapon that can be replaced with better ones just like maces. Leveling up increases both shotgun and melee weapons power. If you try to talk to Brewmaster, the Stranger will drink the potion on the spot and regain his health. Stranger is unable to buy Potion Flasks.

Combat[]

Stranger's melee weapon has a short delay but possesses incredible knockback, making it useful for pushing enemies into water or pits.

His secondary weapon is a double barrel shotgun, or "boomstick." Just like Maxime Gunn's gun, it can aim in all eight directions. It deals damage at range, but the player must stand relatively close to target. Bullets can penetrate through a few enemies. Stranger has to reload after each shot, which makes him vulnerable to attacks. The shotgun has significant recoil; it can causes three or four tiles of knockback on the ground and seven in the air.

Cervul[]

By default, without using secret names or cheat codes, Cervul uses a throwing axe and default set of tools instead of magic. They will be the player's main weapons in a standard playthrough unless they opt to go for the evil route.

Combat[]

Cervul's axes can be thrown at different angles depending on whether he is kneeling, standing, walking, or jumping.

Tools[]

Instead of magic, Cervul possesses various tools:

  • Pavise is a large shield that covers Cervul's full body. When wielded, it can block most projectiles. The projectiles that can be blocked by Alcedor's shield can be blocked by Cervul's pavise.
  • Crossbow is a ranged weapon that can only be shot horizontally. The arrow can go through walls. After each use, the crossbow must be reloaded.
  • Banner provides area of effect to Cervul and Alcedor.
  • Bandages can heal one health bar for each use. It can heal Alcedor, as well. Bandages are restocked at Save Shrines.

Evil Cervul/Cervile[]

Cervul will use bombs instead of axes and new types of tools during his evil route after the First Summoning quest or if he is named Cervile.

Combat[]

Cervul's bombs can be thrown much like his axes, but they can't go through walls, instead exploding on impact with any surface and leaving flames for a short time that damage enemies.

Tools[]

During the evil route, Cervul will use a new set of evil-themed tools:

  • Void beam is an alternative shield that will absorb incoming projectiles and charge up. At any charge level, it can be used to release a fire beam.
  • Poison daggers are throwing weapons that can only be thrown horizontally. It is rather weak but will apply poison to enemies that deals damage over time. Multiple poison effects can be stacked on a single enemy.
  • Oculoservitor is a demon that can be summoned on the battlefield. It will spawn eye minions to attack enemies. All evil eyes will vanish when Oculoservitor is summoned back.
  • Ichor potions are healing items that can only be used by Cervul. Ichor potions are restocked at Save Shrines.

Joe Carbine[]

Joe Carbine

Gameplay-wise, he is the same as the Alcedor's "Maximme Gunn" form. He also has the same appearance, but with a blue color scheme instead of red.

Combat[]

Joe Carbine attack the same way as Maximme Gunn. His only tools are health potions that can only be used on himself.

Miscellaneous[]

Chainsaw[]

ChainsawSprite

You can use a chainsaw as your weapon by inputting the cheat code PAINSAVV on the Game Wizard. This will overwrite Alcedor's look to match his normal appearance, but you will get a chainsaw to use as a weapon.

The chainsaw reaches slightly farther than the mace and attacks much faster, but as a tradeoff, it doesn't deal knockback. You can hold the attack button to keep your weapon in front of you; this makes reflecting projectiles with Precision Strike much easier. Once you're attacking, however, you can't crouch; jumping will cancel the attack.

Motorcedor[]

You can play as Maxime Gunn on a motorcycle (similar to the one seen during the Future ending's credit roll) by inputting the cheat code NOTPOZES. This will provide you with a motorcycle you can ride and dismount at will (important, since you can't interact with NPCs while using it). If you ever lose it, you can go back to a save shrine and turn the cheat on again to get it back.

This cheat will grant you with enhanced horizontal mobility, but most importantly of all are the combat changes: touching enemies or harmful projectiles won't deal damage, but rather only knock you around. Additionally, you can press the attack button to boost forward while engulfed by a magical force which kills enemies, even bosses, on contact.

The character is not completely invincible; stage hazards such as lava or bottomless pits can still kill you. The infinite jumps cheat becomes useful for areas that require Skycall, such as Stormheim Castle.

Demon Alcedor[]

Demon Alcedor is only available for a very short time, during the fight with Abbadon right before the Ultimate Evil ending. Not much changes about the gameplay, but he will likely override any mobility-related cheats you are using, since the arena used for the aforementioned battle has no ground to stand on.

The most noteworthy enhancement Alcedor gains upon demonic transformation is the ability to fly. There are no restrictions to this; you can move around freely across all eight directions, albeit a bit slowly. Additionally, you will always shoot a fireball projectile after swinging your sword, even without using Hellfire. This improvement to your attack potential is necessary, as otherwise you wouldn't be able to defend yourself or deal damage to the boss without taking it back in return. It also frees up mana for you to use other spells.

Demon Cervul[]

Demon Cervul's gameplay is the same as Alcedor's during the boss fight with Abbadon. The only major difference is that Cervul can't use magic and, therefore, can't use Hellfire to his advantage.

Trivia[]

  • Players were unable to use Holy Charge with the chainsaw cheat active at release, but this has been fixed since version 1.02. Additionally, this update fixed a bug that let Motorcedor move around in cutscenes and allowed the player to use infinite jumps while on the bike.
  • Maximme Gun is likely named in reference to the Maxim gun, the first recoil-driven machine gun. In spite of that, however, the machine gun he uses is an FN Minimi.
